What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support is an individualised, respectful, and practical approach to understanding and addressing behaviours of concern. Instead of trying to "fix" a person, PBS looks at the why behind behaviours — helping people meet their needs in safer, more positive ways.

PBS is built on human rights, dignity, and collaboration. It’s recognised under the NDIS as a best-practice approach for supporting people with disability.

How we Work

We start by getting to know a person — their strengths, needs, and goals. Our Behaviour Support Practitioners then complete a functional behaviour assessment and create a tailored Behaviour Support Plan that includes:

  • Preventative strategies that reduce triggers

  • Skill-building to replace behaviours of concern

  • Positive reinforcement to encourage growth

  • Environmental changes to support success

  • Team collaboration to make it all sustainable

We work closely with participants, families, schools, therapists, and support workers to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Who Can Benefit?

Positive Behaviour Support is helpful for:

  • Individuals of all ages with autism, intellectual disability, or developmental delay

  • People experiencing behaviours of concern such as aggression, self-injury, withdrawal, or refusal

  • Those with mental health conditions or dual diagnoses seeking support with emotional regulation

  • Families, carers, and support workers needing practical, respectful strategies

  • People with acquired brain injury (ABI) adjusting to changes in behaviour or communication

  • Individuals with limited or non-verbal communication who express needs through behaviour

  • Older adults navigating behavioural changes linked to dementia or cognitive decline

  • Everyone!

If someone is feeling stuck, misunderstood, or overwhelmed, PBS can help build a path forward.

Core Values That Guide Us

  • Person-Centred: Your voice and choices come first.

  • Strength-Based: We focus on what’s working and build from there.

  • Collaborative: We work with the whole support network.

  • Least Restrictive: We aim to reduce or eliminate any restrictive practices.

  • Evidence-Based: Our plans are grounded in science and updated as needed.

Reducing Restrictive Practices

Under NDIS guidelines, restrictive practices must only be used when absolutely necessary, and only with proper safeguards. Our role is to minimise or remove these practices over time by replacing them with safe, effective alternatives that respect the person's rights and autonomy.

Why It Matters

PBS isn’t just about reducing behaviours. It’s about improving lives. Benefits include:

  • Increased emotional regulation and independence

  • Better communication skills

  • Stronger relationships with family and peers

  • Safer, more predictable environments

  • Greater access to community, school, and work opportunities

Effective behaviour support doesn’t happen in isolation. That’s why we involve parents, support workers, teachers, therapists, and coordinators. We provide coaching, training, and collaborative planning to help everyone stay aligned and empowered.

✔ Focused on Long-Term Change

Our goal is not just to reduce behaviours of concern, but to help individuals learn new skills, experience success, and build a life they’re proud of. We focus on sustainable change, not quick fixes.
